About me

Lynn Samis

I’ve always been captivated by people—their faces, stories, and the threads that connect us all. My art is about celebrating that shared humanity. I believe every person has a story that deserves to be seen, heard, and felt, and in my paintings, I aim to bring a piece of each subject’s story to life.

Much of my inspiration comes from photographs my grandfather took on his world tour in 1923-1924. Those images are family history to me—they’re a connection to another time and to people I’ll never meet but feel deeply linked to. When I paint them, I honor my grandfather, the people in his photographs, and the idea that we all have a place and a voice in the world.

I paint in oil and acrylic on canvas and wood panels, often using a palette knife to add layers and textures that give my work depth and movement. The backgrounds are always abstract, and the clothing nonspecific, allowing each painting to feel timeless. You might be able to tell someone’s gender, but my goal isn’t high realism; I prefer an abstract realism that allows my subjects to resonate with viewers as individuals, not just faces. There’s an intentional openness in each piece, inviting you to see people not just as subjects, but as reflections of our shared humanity.

My work bridges between cultures as a reminder of our common ground, which is especially meaningful to me. It speaks to those who believe everyone deserves a place and a voice, especially in today’s divided world. My desire is that when viewing my paintings, you can reflect, connect, and maybe even see a bit of yourself in their stories.

My art’s been featured in Southwest Art Magazine and Santa Fe Magazine, and you can find my pieces displayed at Acosta Strong Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico and at The Nutt House Hotel in Granbury, Texas.

When I’m not painting in my studio, you’ll find me with my husband of 42 years taking walks with our two golden doodles, spending time with our children and grandchildren, working out, reading, and when possible, traveling. We divide our time between Fort Worth, Texas and Santa Fe, New Mexico during the year, both places providing unique and special inspiration for me.

Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time” (Thomas Merton)
